S1000D® approach to technical publications has been applied globally throughout nations and industries. After being rolled out, it proved to improve and stabilize the products life-cycle of technical publications considerably. In Denmark, it is widely applied by the Danish Defence.
One of the core principles of S1000D® is to create technical information once, in a structured and modular way. Then reuse it many times, inside a given publication or in an environment of a given program, and finally utilize it both in a variety of electronic formats and as traditionally printed manuals. Through a series of interface modules, it offers multilateral options for integrating technical information with product data and business processes.

The only drawback of S1000D® is high implementation costs. S1000D® was initially developed for military aircrafts by AeroSpace and Defence Industries Association of Europe (ASD). Today the primary stakeholders in the development of the S1000D® are three associations: ASD, Aerospace Industries Association of America (AIA), and ATA e-Business Program.
The content of the specification has been enhanced to accommodate the requirements for land, sea and commercial equipment. S1000D® is part of the S-series of ILS (Integrated Logistics Support) specifications. The whole S-Series of Specification including the SX000i for ILS is being developed with the purpose of harmonizing data generation, exchange and management processes within the entire life-cycle of any product, however complex, in the civil and defense industry.
